Receives $5,000 cash and podcast feature

Shavonya Coleman, a 3rd-grade teacher at Positive Tomorrows in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, has been awarded the prestigious Honored National Teaching Award for June 2026. As part of her honor, she received a $5,000 cash award and was featured on Inspiring Teachers: The Honored Podcast.

At Positive Tomorrows, trust is the foundation for everything. As a trauma-informed educator, Shavonya creates an environment of consistency and stability for students whose lives feel unpredictable outside of school. With a strong school community, students are given a foundation for personal and academic growth that affirms they are supported and loved.

Shavonya Coleman was nominated for this award by Krystle, the parent of her student, Serenity. From their first interaction, Krystle knew that this school year would be different, as she witnessed Shavonya’s caring and attentive nature. These qualities became even more evident throughout the beginning of the school year as Shavonya identified Serenity’s needs for speech therapy, something that had been overlooked in her previous school experiences. In Krystle’s words, “[My daughter] said, ‘I need a teacher who can teach me how I learn.’ And she said, Mrs. Coleman teaches her how she learns.”
