Washington, DC - January 1, 2021
Brenda Alarcón, a 4th-grade teacher at Bridgeport Elementary school in Tualatin, Oregon has been given the prestigious national Honored National Teaching Award for January. As part of this award, Alarcón, received a $5,000 cash award and a $1,000 DonorsChoose.org gift card. She also had her story composed by award-winning journalist, Kavitha Cardoza.
Alarcón, an Oregon native, has taught for 27 years all over the country. Building strong relationships with students and families, Ms. Alarcon is dedicated to supporting all students, especially those who come from difficult backgrounds. Brenda Mathis, the foster parent and Grandmother of Blake, who nominated Alarcon, credits her with building a strong family-teacher partnership in and out of school to increase her grandson’s confidence in the classroom. Mathis says:
“I could start crying just thinking about it. I mean, no teacher has ever gone over and above like that for either of my kids or even when I was a kid. No teacher ever reached out like that. She’s phenomenal.”
