Candence Jones, an English teacher and basketball coach at Charles R. Drew High School, has been given the prestigious Honored National Teaching Award for September 2024. As part of her honor, George received a $5,000 cash award and was profiled by Laura Lumpkin, an education journalist at the Washington Post.
Jones believes everybody has a gift and can find their passion. She works hard to ensure all her students are ready to explore the diverse array of opportunities awaiting them after high school. In her English class, students build “senior exit portfolios” that challenge them to think deeply about their goals and help start to move toward their ambitions. Outside of her classroom, she wears many other hats – homecoming organizer, girls basketball and boys tennis coach, student government association advisor, school mom. She is there for her students in innumerable ways.
Jones was nominated for the Honored award by three of her students, De’Ajah Connor, Hannah Watson, and Danielle Burley, who each describe her as an exceptional teacher and mentor. As De’Ajah explained, “she pushes her students to the level that she sees in us. We just don’t see it in ourselves.”
