Receives $5,000 cash and story by award-winning author

Diana Fernandez, a Kindergarten teacher at Pinecrest Cove Preparatory Academy, has been given the prestigious Honored National Teaching Award for November 2024. As part of her honor, Fernandez received a $5,000 cash award and was profiled by Sydney Page, a journalist at The Washington Post.

As the daughter of Colombian immigrants, Fernandez grew up facing harsh criticism from her Kindergarten teacher. Her experiences with anxiety and isolation became the driving force behind her Kindergarten teaching philosophy today. Determined to create an environment where her students are valued and empowered, Fernandez is known for cultivating an inclusive, nurturing classroom where mistakes are embraced as part of the learning process.

Fernandez was nominated for the Honored Award by a parent, Lianet Sarduy, who has witnessed her son Aidan’s incredible transformation in Fernandez’s classroom. Last year, Aidan, felt discouraged and frustrated in his Pre-K class, dreading school and fearing mistakes. This year, in Fernandez’s classroom, Sarduy shared that her son’s “overall attitude about school completely shifted…it’s a beautiful thing to see.”
