Andover Teacher Wins National Teaching Award
Receives $5,000 cash award and story by New York Times Best-selling Author
Washington, DC - August 1, 2019
Louis Bernieri, a legendary English teacher at Phillips Academy Andover, has been given the prestigious national Honored National Teaching Award for August. As part of this award, Bernieri received a $5,000 cash award and a $1,000 DonorsChoose.org gift card. He also had his story composed by William Cohan, a New York Times best-selling author and special correspondent for Vanity Fair, himself a graduate of Andover.
Bernieri has taught English at Andover for 42 years — impacting thousands of students — and founded the Andover Bread Loaf outreach program. His former student, Colleen Cronin, who nominated him for the award, arrived at Andover from a public school in the nearby town of Lawrence feeling unprepared and overwhelmed. She credits Bernieri with giving her the support and confidence she needed to succeed. Cronin says:
“Mr. Bernieri was monumental in helping me to discover my voice and develop my writing as a medium for self-expression. More importantly, he changed the way I thought about myself, my community, and my education.”
