Odessa, NY History Teacher "Honored" for His Work In and Out of the Classroom
WASHINGTON, DC - October 1, 2018
Odessa Public School Teacher Honored by National Organization
Receives $5,000 award and story by award-winning journalist, Shaun Waterman
WASHINGTON, D.C. (September 1, 2018) – Marc Kimmerly, a history teacher and baseball coach at Odessa-Montour Central School has been given the prestigious national Honored teaching award for October. As part of his honor, Kimmerly received a $5,000 cash award and a $1,000 DonorsChoose.org gift card, and was profiled by award-winning journalist Shaun Waterman, of POLITICO.
Kimmerly was nominated for the Honored award by his student Gabriel Grover. In his nomination essay, Gabriel wrote,
“I feel beyond fortunate to have a teacher of his caliber in my world. After being homeschooled for my 5th and 6th grade years, I was naturally anxious, upon returning to public school, but Mr. K. put me completely at ease. He was unbelievably welcoming to me and so supportive and sensitive to my circumstances. It feels like he is pulling me out of my shell, which is really adding to my confidence.”
Kimmerly began his teaching career in an urban high school in Brooklyn before transferring to the rural town of Odessa. There are “very extreme differences in the environment” between Manhattan and Odessa, he acknowledged, “But if you look past that, it’s not really different … I mean, kids are kids — it doesn’t matter where they are. All kids can learn and they just have to be exposed to the material in a way that interests them and that means something to them. That’s what engages the students,” he says. For students like Gabriel, Kimmerly’s care for his students and creativity with the curriculum make his history class engaging and relevant. “It is obvious to me that he cares about more than just the proficiency of his students,” says Gabriel. “I absolutely aspire to be like him.”
