Nashville Public School Teacher Honored by National Organization

Receives $5,000 award and story by award-winning Nashville journalist and news anchor Holly Thompson

WASHINGTON, D.C. - September 1, 2018

Bailey Koerner, a math teacher at H.G. Hill Middle School in Nashville, Tennessee, has been given the prestigious national Honored teaching award for September. As part of her honor, Koerner received a $5,000 cash award and a $1,000 gift card, and she had her story composed by Holly Thompson, an Emmy-Award winning journalist and WSMV News 4 anchor.

Koerner was nominated for the Honored award by her student DeAndrea Wright. DeAndrea says that before she joined Ms. Koerner’s class,

“I hated math so much because it made me feel like I wasn’t smart enough. And now, I love it! It’s my favorite subject. I was ready to give up, but Ms. Koerner would not let that happen, and I am very thankful for that.”

Koerner teaches her students a simple but powerful motto: Always give it your best shot. And never, ever give up. The “growth mindset” Koerner teaches made a significant impact on DeAndrea, who used to often get discouraged and speak poorly of herself. Koerner says, “When they doubt their abilities, I tell my students, ‘No… say, ‘I can’t do this YET. You just can’t figure it out YET. Try again. Don’t give up.’” This change of mindset crossed over and permeated all aspects of DeAndrea’s life outside of school; because of one dedicated and challenging teacher, she now feels like there’s nothing she can’t do.
