Student Nomination Story

It is my great privilege to recommend Ms. Lindsay Trefzger for National Teacher of the year. I have known Ms. Lindsay Trefzger (Ms. T) since my daughter entered Kindergarten in the West Wing 2022-2023 school year. I feel like we won the education lottery by my daughter being placed in her class. During the time my daughter has been under her umbrella, she has flourished in more ways than I can explain. My daughter never attended formal preschool, nor had she ever been taken care of by anyone outside of family.  Ms. T made me and her feel like she was an extension of family and not just a teacher doing a job.  She made sure that she instilled confidence in her and made her strong, both academically, and as a person. My daughter has thrived academically under Ms. T.   She is organized and her daily, weekly, and monthly lesson plans are clearly throughout, understandable and makes learning fun, leaving the child wanting more.  She sets your child up for success inside and outside the classroom.  She demonstrates this by sending home monthly homework packets with clear expectations for the child and parents and helps you help your child to succeed; as well as adhoc nightly homework that builds on what was taught that day for learning reinforcement.  My daughter especially loved the books Ms. T would send home weekly for her to practice at night for us to read together. Under her instruction my daughter not only understood and can model phonics but as result was reading by Christmas and had mastered not only kindergarten but 1st grade site words and begging for more homework sheets as she truly loves to go to school. Over the past year I have known Ms. T, I have seen her kindness and compassion for children. This is not just a job for Ms. T but a calling, and one she is exceptionally great at.  I have had the opportunity to see Ms. T in action as I have volunteered in the classroom every other week and for all field trips throughout the school year.  She always goes the extra mile for her students. Her concern for her students is obvious, and she ensures that they come out shining.  Her ability to keep an orderly and positive learning environment in the classroom with twenty plus kinder students who are captivated by her and are always ready to listen and learn is amazing! Ms. T is also a great support system for parents who want to be actively involved in their children’s progress in school.  She always responds and answers all emails timely and keeps parents in the communication loop.  She sends out weekly Friday emails of a recap for the week and what is upcoming to prepare the parents for the next week; the level of engagement, caring and communication is commendable.  My stepson is thirteen and I have never seen the level of engagement and true caring and compassion in any other teacher like her, she is one of a kind.  Her connection with the children, parents and teaching style is one to be modeled for success. She does all the above and is also a parent herself.  Balancing the work life balance is hard for many, but Ms. T does it effortlessly, you can tell she loves helping mold young minds and being a part of their story. If there is any further information required to support her for Teacher of the year, please feel free to contact me. Nicole Ferrer
