Student Nomination Story

My name is Malcolm and I am an active duty member of the United States Air Force. I am e-mailing to you about my father Lester James. He is a brother to 10 siblings, Father of 5, and mentor to thousands of people in communities throughout the east coast. Commonly referred to as ‘Gunny’, the 2019-2020 school year will mark his 20th year of teaching JROTC. My father served just over 20 years in the United States Marine Corps and immediately started teaching JROTC in Dale City, VA following his retirement from active duty. He taught at Gar-Field Senior High School for 12 years, 1 year down in Georgia at a Navy JROTC program, and currently instructs at Indian River High School in Dagsboro, Delaware where he helped save the program from being shut down.
