Karen Patinella
James F Byrnes High School, Duncan, South Carolina
Student Nomination Story
Ms. Patinella taught my son two semesters of the German language when he had to take up e-learning due to the Pandemic. She made the courses enjoyable, so students were more engaged. She took an interest in my son's future by offering to write an outstanding letter of recommendation for college and even went to his golf game to show support during a difficult time in the Pandemic. Teaching is one of the most selfless careers on earth because teachers serve children, helping their minds and hearts grow, encouraging them to be the best version of themselves. This is Ms. Patinella times ten because she goes above and beyond what is expected of a teacher. She recently experienced the loss of her brother when he died from complications after having his aorta replaced. She also has to take care of her sister who is terminally ill with cancer and is in the final stages. Through all of this adversity, she still had time to write a beautiful letter of recommendation for my son who has his own dreams of teaching history at the college level. Ms. Patinella is an outstanding teacher in every respect and deserves the recognition of the highest caliber.
