Student Nomination Story

Yukon Middle School is very fortunate to have Jason Hammett as a 7th grade Science teacher and volleyball coach. Mr. Hammett’s approach to education is atypical. Mr. Hammett, an alternatively certified educator not only focuses on the core curriculum but also broader life-lessons. Jason provides an inviting atmosphere where all students can, and desire to, learn. Often, he dialogues with students about the skills and tools necessary to be successful in life; he also emphasizes that he can show them how to use the tool but he cannot make them pick it up. Mr. Hammett approaches his classroom like he does the court; the students in each of his classes constitute a team and they all need to be engaged for any of them to be successful. Jason also teaches that helping others grow is so rewarding. Students know when they enter the room that they will be challenged and cared for. One student says “Once you enter his room you know that something exciting is happening. He makes science fun.” Another student says that Mr. Hammett “helps with any problem” and “gives good advice when I’m upset.” Two students and athletes said the following “we have both had the opportunity to spend time with Mr. Hammett through volleyball. He has taught us both so much about the importance of being productive learners and respectful athletes. We are so grateful for what he has done for us.” Colleagues have witnessed Mr. Hammett’s ability to deescalate volatile situations, defuse anger from a student, all while communicating empathy and dignity to all involved. “One coworker recognizes his ability to positively influence and interact with individuals, regardless of position or age, and encourage them to greater things. Mr. Hammett is not shy about his belief that all students can be successful in their own ways and at their own pace and he does everything that he can to help influence this, working tirelessly to ensure that those who interact with him on a daily basis are encouraged and believe that they can be who they were created to be.”
