Congratulations to
National Teaching Award Nominee
Eric Nelson
The Harker School, San Jose, California
Student Nomination Story
Dr. Nelson is the head Computer science department at my school and has taught me Intro to Astronomy and Astrophysics. Going into the class I knew I liked black holes, but I had no knowledge of what Astronomy and Astrophysics entailed. Being the only girl in his Astronomy class I was not sure if I wanted to continue that class. Initially, I was shy to ask questions, as these were concepts that I have not read before. But Dr. Nelson never treated me differently. He encouraged me in the same way as he did other kids. He put me on the same standards as other kids. So I felt I was not invisible. Over the period of talking with him, I understood that it was ok to ask questions as these were not easy or straightforward concepts. I admire his passion for physics, especially Astrophysics. His room is filled with a different telescope that he let us use anytime we want. He loves to teach kids how to use each one and spends an endless amount of time on the concepts. He says once you understand the concept you can apply them in different ways. Being a Junior in high school I was not sure what I want to do in life, but after working with Dr. Nelson I know I would like to study Astrophysics. We need to clone Dr. Nelson who can encourage girls to the pursue Physics!!
