National Teaching Award Nominee
Caesar Campana
Hayesville High School, Hayesville, North Carolina
Student Nomination Story
As for nearly every student, COVID-19 has had drastic effects on the social and educational norms of said student's life. Because of excellent, positive, and hard-working teachers though, that students, such as myself, maintain a desire to learn; because of Mr. Campana, I have remained motivated during a hybrid education set up. For several years, I have heard wonderful things about Mr. Campana-- from his personality to his kindness-- but most importantly, students have always noted that he has taught them how to think-- not what to think. He fosters intuition, creativity, and growth. He has continued to go above and beyond expectations to continue his mission to encourage intellectual growth through philosophically challenging questions and topics. I finally have Mr. Campana this semester, for a new class called Global Studies. While I have grown according to the course curriculum, in that I am far more well-versed on global topics than I was just four months ago, I have felt an immeasurable improvement in my critical thinking skills and have seen a change in my outlook on a lot of situations. Namely, I have learned just how highly-nuanced debates, topics, and issues that face our world can be. I never believed all things were simply black and white, but now, more so than before, I recognize the importance of understanding all sides and perspectives. Mr. Campana has shown grace in a time of challenge and uncertainty and manages to change the hearts and minds of students when school is full-time, fully remote, or a hybrid of the two. He is highly-deserving of this honor for his steadfast commitment to education and growth.
