Student Nomination Stories

Nominated by: Galilea Rodriguez

She has pushed me to become a better version of my old self. At times, I was weak and I wanted to give up. However, Coach Alvarez made me realize certain things I never knew I could, so thank you.

Nominated by: Zenia Hernandez

Coming into high school was a struggle. I wasn't prepared for the experience. My name is Zenia Hernandez and I am sophomore in high school. My attitude towards high school before meeting coach Alvarez towards was always down. I never saw a point to try. My biggest challenges before I met her was thinking who I would go to when I felt like giving up and who I would go to for support. My teacher is special because she is one of a kind. She always makes sure I am doing my best and when I ́m not, she pushes me to do better. There is no teacher that gives me the amount of trust and makes me feel confident like she does. Coach Alvarez gave me support in my goals because she saw what nobody else saw in me. My goal was to get my grades up so my GPA could get higher and become a better soccer player. With practice and dedication I eventually started improving. If I had any inconvenience or issue she was always the person I went to because her judgement in my life made me push for everything instead of giving up. Some things that my coach did for me was motivate me, offered moral support, and became a friend who I could always count on. I remember during the summer, I attended SPAT and she was always there. I didn't really have self confidence when running. I thought I was pretty slow and couldn't run cross country. Throughout practices she would always tell me that I'm getting faster and I should run cross country. She motivated me to keep running and run cross country. Something she did that stuck with me was give me a speech when I felt like giving up. I'm very grateful for my coach because she always made sure I was okay when I had nobody. She always motivated me to push without quitting. I feel better about school and ever since I listen to her advice more often my GPA has gone up. My GPA used to be a 3.5 it is now a 4.2. I think it's crazy how much of an effect a person can have in your life whenever you are down.
