Student Nomination Story

Mimi (Ms. Davis) is an outstanding teacher! She is innovative, encouraging and engaging. My son, Kemp, had her as a Pre-K and Kindergarten teacher his first two years of public school. She has taught in the school system for over 20 years and her experience shows. One thing that has always stood out to me is her "Garden Club". The Garden Club is not only part of the curriculum for her kindergarten class, but there is an actual club that is held after school. Mimi and Donna Hively (literally, the worlds best school volunteer that could ever exist) began the garden several years ago at Ruffner. This is where the students learn to grow and cultivate their own food. They grow fruits, vegetables and plants. Students learn the process of composting as well. They are involved from the beginning with planting, weeding, watering and finally picking their produce. They have several events throughout the year where they make food out of their crops, as well as a store where the community is encouraged to shop. She has been able to secure donations to help make this a viable opportunity, as well as developing partnerships with farms and businesses to promote the garden. Mimi is highly involved in her school and students. She is a member of the PTO and takes part in every event at the school. For "Fall Festival" she puts on a Haunted Trail, which is the most attended attraction. She also helped spear-head the "Arts Gala", which is a showcase of musical and artistic efforts of the students. Mimi also secures donations from local businesses for other events that are held. She is a devoted and loving teacher. Mimi has provided some underprivileged students with many necessities over the years. If she feels a student is in need, she make sure that need is met. I have personally seen her give all of herself to her students on a daily basis. If a student needs a hug, a word of encouragement or just a shoulder to lean on, she provides that. Even if they aren't her student. Over the past 5 years, I have gotten to know Mimi personally. I can think of no other person more deserving of being honored by your organization. She sets a high standard for an elementary school teacher and should be thanked for her efforts. Mimi makes an effort to not only get to know her students personally, but their parents as well. She is very open to communicate and encourages parents to engage in their child(s) schooling. I have often heard her say that it is imperative for teachers not only to work with students, but parents as well because it creates a positive environment for everyone. I couldn't agree more! I hope you will consider Mary "Mimi" Davis of Ruffner Elementary School in Charleston, West Virginia to be Honored!
