National Teaching Award Nominee
Kimberly DeVries
Century Junior High School, Orland Park, Illinois
Student Nomination Story
Mrs. DeVries was my teacher approximately 10 years ago. She was genuinely passionate about the content that she taught, and she stood out to me in the most positive way. Her positivity makes the climate of Century what it is, and I was always too shy to admit it, but she was one of my favorite teachers. As a pre-service teacher, I take parts of every teacher that I have had and plan on emulating certain characteristics. Her kindness has always meant so much to me, and a kind heart is something that I want to bring into the classroom in order to make a difference in my students' lives just like she made a difference in mine. She is truly a gold star teacher and one who still continues to keep in touch with me as a former student. I honestly wish more teachers were like Mrs. DeVries- kind, inspiring, and passionate. She is my Mrs. Warnecke which is a teacher from a book I read who really made a difference in a life of one of her students, and she deserves much recognition for all she does. She chooses kind on a daily basis and truly deserves a standing ovation. Teachers are oftentimes under-appreciated, and a simple thank you can go a long way. Due to being a pre-service teacher, I know the impact teachers can make firsthand, and due to being the first in my family to graduate with a Bachelors degree this May, I am filled with endless gratitude for the teachers, like Mrs. DeVries, who pushed me to be the best version of myself and helped me become the person I am today. She will always hold a special place in my heart.
