Student Nomination Story
Imagine a young girl of 15 who had just gotten out of 10 years of abuse by both parents. I was beaten down and afraid. Afraid of people but mostly of adult men. But most of all just out of the hospital after a suicide attempt. It was my sophomore year and I joined theatre because I didn't really have much artistic talent. Mr. Hammer wasn't even my teacher. He taught technical theatre. A few times he and and my teacher would combine classes to do improv. He taught us how to relax and clear our minds so that we could act. It was truly a miracle and a life long practice I still use 9 years later. It was the first time my mind wasn't screaming with anxiety. He taught us life skills that we could use for years to come. But most of all he cared and cares about his students. He would ask you how you are doing and really want to know. He would ask you about your goals. He would inspire you to be your best person. Oh and he didn't put up with jerks in the class. Everyone respected this teacher. Here we are years later and now my 16 year old nephew goes there and is in his class. He is always coming home saying how amazing this teacher is and how he has motivated and inspired his life. He has been taught work ethic and other skills. Next year I have a friend who's son will be a freshman and has a mental disorder and all I can hope is that Mr. Hammer is still at Byron so that he can impact another life. I still see Mr. Hammer and he still cares about how I am. If it wasn't for Mr. Hammer I would have never made it through high school and I certainly wouldn't be the mother that I am today.
