Student Nomination Story

On my first day of middle school I was a really scared 6th grader. When it was time for me to go to my 3rd block on that first day of school I knew that I had math that block and instantly started dreading it. Math has always been a subject that I have struggled in and that I have no confidence in, which makes it really hard for me to want to do and I would get discouraged easily. Walking into Mrs Shimko's math class was different though. It was a homey and cozy environment that I felt comfortable in. Once I started talking to Mrs Shimko, my nerves and worries immediately went away because she sat there and told us that everything was going to be alright and that it was not just going to be us doing this, but she is going to be there every step of the way to help us and support us as much as she possibly could. As the first weeks of school went on I decided to share with her that I have always struggled with math and that I never have done that well in math and she stopped what she was doing right then and there, looked me in the eyes, and told me that it was all going to change this year. As 6th grade went on I started to get bullied and at that time there still were not that many teachers that I still felt comfortable with and so I went to Mrs Shimko and she helped me through all of it. She helped me in the times that were so hard for me and she had a way of getting me to open up and talk to her so that she could help me better. As the year went on I realized that for the first time ever I was starting to do well in math and I was not dreading it anymore like I used to. Mrs Shimko set me up for success for the rest of my year and I am truly forever grateful for that. I had always thought that I would like to be a teacher but never truly thought about that until 6th grade when I had Mrs Shimko. I saw that a teacher is not just a person that teaches you things, but that a teacher is a person that will go above and beyond for you and that will always go out of their way to help you. It is because of what Mrs Shimko showed me that I want to be a teacher and influence other peoples lives the same way that she influenced my life. I believe that Mrs Shimko is the best teacher on earth and I feel like this would be a great way to show her that so that she really knows how much she does mean to me.
