Teacher at Marlborough School in Los Angeles "Honored" by National Organization

Cathy Atwell chosen as July Honoree; profiled by journalist Amanda Fortini

WASHINGTON, DC - July 1, 2018

Cathy Atwell, a history and social sciences teacher at Marlborough School in Los Angeles, has been given the prestigious national Honored teaching award for July.  As part of her award, Atwell received a $5,000 cash award and a $1,000 DonorsChoose.org gift card, and had her story composed by Amanda Fortini, a renowned journalist and contributing editor at Elle magazine.

Atwell teaches history and social sciences at Marlborough School, an independent all-girls school in Los Angeles, where she is given a wide berth to exercise her talents and interests.  As Fortini writes,

“She speaks multiple languages (English, Spanish, Russian, a touch of Arabic, conversational Czech, and there’s surely one or two I’m forgetting).  She travels to numerous far-flung destinations (Myanmar, Sudan, Mongolia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, China, Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia, to name only a few).  She lived in Russia during the 90s. One of the electives she teaches is called Terrorism, and looks at, in her words, ‘smuggling, international criminal syndicates, border conflicts, money laundering, counterfeiting, the drug trade, and weapons proliferation.’”

Atwell is committed to opening the world to the young women she teaches and to bringing out the best in each and every one of them.  As she says,

“I want them to come out with curiosity about the world, with passion and enthusiasm, to feel as though they have a voice and they matter—and that they are in a position to be able to exercise their voice, whatever that might entail.”

Atwell is being honored for her particular influence on two of her students, sisters Alli Yoon and Lauren Yoon.  Alli, who graduated from Marlborough and now attends Yale University, explains, “I felt like Ms. Atwell always expected a lot of me, and because of that, I was always able to do better than what I originally thought I could.”
